Chris will Caring about the environment means realizing the interdependence of nature and human well-being. While living in a city that provides services like a public transportation system and recycling plants I think that since living here I produce too much trash. Over the next month I will be testing bringing my own ceramic coffee mug after experiencing that 1) many coffee shops refuse to fill my stainless steel travel mug or use a paper cup to make the drink before pouring it into my travel mug and 2) at many meetings only paper cups are available. This is frustrating, as these cups are lined with plastic and cannot be recycled. I saw real degradable cups only once at a meeting. This simple step will potentially save 5 to 10 cups per week from going into the landfill.

Just do it
Trying this as best as I could, I brought my coffee cup - the nicest one I own to make it really count - literally everywhere. I Learned quickly who is still refusing to fill the cup and made me going somewhere else. I ended up "using" three paper cups this month in total. All three were wasted in preparation for my coffee by a barista in autopilot mode. Bringing the cup to meetings worked great and I received at least one interesting comment per meeting about it. I'd like to share some here. One guy suspected I brought it to get more coffee in one shot. Two women wondered where these pretty cups are, they wanted one for their own drink. They were surprized to learn that they were not provided to all board members. Another woman thought I brought it because coffee tastes better out of an actual cup (she's right!) and found it "revolutionary." I found that most people really liked the idea. Several colleagues mentioned doing the same from now on and in one meeting we made it a challenge to bring a cup the next time. I understand that this small-scale challenge seems far away from the change many want to see in the world. I still believe little things make big things happen
