Space: The Final Frontier, hear me on America Out Loud on space, space travel, and astrophysics

With the recent civilian billionaires heading to space, Rob and Andrew invited me as a guest on their show After Dark on America Out Loud to speak about space, humans going there, and my helping build satellites with NASA and ESA (the European Space Agency).

I haven’t gotten to nerd out on my rocket-based work in years, even decades. I don’t remember the hard equations since I’m out of practice, but I’ll never lose the passion for discovering about nature and understanding mind-bending perspectives the frontiers of physics creates.

Here’s the episode:

In it I shared one of my favorite passages from my upcoming book. I had a little trouble speaking about my misgivings of space tourism, but we got to talk about a lot.

Here are the show notes:

“Space the final frontier… to explore strange new worlds. To seek out new life and new civilizations. To boldly go where no man has gone before!” This mission statement was part of the opening for the popular television SyFy series Star Trek.

Although the show aired 50 years ago, the premises of the show still exist today. Even now we find ourselves wondering about life on other planets and if those planets are inhabitable for human sustainability.

Joshua Spodek, an astrophysicist, joins “After Dark with Rob and Andrew” to talk about space and the satellite he helped build and launch into space. Spodek said the recent trips by billionaires Richard Branson and Jeff Bezos are exciting and have garnered a lot of attention. He stops short in suggesting colonies be created for living there and not because it wouldn’t be possible. Instead, he is more concerned constant travel could lead to harm or affect any possible ecosystem that may exist.

Joshua Spodek Ph.D. MBA is a three-time TEDx speaker, #1 bestselling author of Initiative and Leadership Step by Step, host of the award-winning This Sustainable Life podcast, and professor at NYU. He holds a Ph.D. in astrophysics and an MBA from Columbia, where he studied under a Nobel Laureate and helped launch a satellite. He is one of the founders of an invention that showed animated images to subway riders between stations. He has taught and coached leadership and entrepreneurship at NYU and Columbia Business School. He has spoken at Harvard, Princeton, West Point, Google, IBM, The New York Academy of Science, and Children’s Aid Society. He has appeared on TV and in the NY Times and Wall Street Journal to discuss Sustainable Life and leadership. He was called the “best and brightest” in Esquire’s Genius issue, “astrophysicist turned new media whiz” by NBC, and “rocket scientist” by Forbes.

Spodek has swum across the Hudson River twice, has done burpees daily since 2011 (165,000 and counting), takes 16 months to produce one load of garbage, and hasn’t flown (by choice) since March 2016.

On America Out Loud

America Out Loud promotes conservative politics, especially Donald Trump. Most people I know who promote conserving the environment denigrate such outlets. I consider talking with them, developing relationships with them, and collaborating with them some of the most important work to do.

Rob and Andrew have both been on This Sustainable Life. Here are their episodes:

If you don’t talk to people you disagree with, I suggest you’re missing out on your greatest opportunities to learn.
