Other thoughts after knee surgery

Amazing results and gratitude

I walked back from surgery. To clarify: I walked two-and-a-half miles on the knee they did surgery on a couple hours after they did it. Years ago I would never have imagined it possible. Now I know it’s normal, but experiencing it hits more viscerally than hearing about it from friends.

Recovery will take weeks or months, but it seems little given what they did. I feel gratitude to the surgeon, his team, and modern medicine.

Waste

As usual, a lot of unnecessary waste was produced. Many things that could have been cleaned and reused were disposable. The nurse insisted I use things like their disposable socks that, when I didn’t use them, were no problem. How much else disposable was unnecessary? Every time someone saw me, they used new gloves which they then threw away. I asked them not to but they told me they had to follow rules.

Icing

They gave me an icing pack, a plastic bag with some blue liquid, but my fridge is unplugged, so I can’t use it. I guess I’ll have to endure the swelling taking longer to subside. Oh wait, not just the fridge is unplugged. The whole apartment is too. I don’t feel like asking a neighbor to use their freezer. I guess I could use one of the break rooms at NYU, but going there seems too much effort.
