Brian is a technology journalist who frequently writes about automation, labor, and how tech impacts the environment, among other things. He has also covered the climate crisis, biodiversity loss, and clean energy. He wrote a bestselling book about the iPhone, the One Device. He is currently working at on a second book, about the first rebellion against automation—the deeply misunderstood Luddite uprisings of the early 1800s—and what might cause the next one.
The One Device was shortlisted for many awards, and was optioned for a limited series. It has been translated into a dozen languages.
His writing has appeared in The New York Times, Harper’s Magazine, Wired, the Atlantic, the LA Times, the Guardian, Slate, VICE Magazine, the Verge, Gizmodo, the Outline, Fast Company, Fortune, Paste, and elsewhere. For years, he was a writer and editor at Motherboard, VICE’s science and technology outlet, where he founded Terraform, its online fiction site.
