Etienne Stott MBE

Etienne Stott MBE is an Olympic Gold Medalist in slalom canoe. He started competing at the international level in 2002. He retired from the sport in 2016. He has become active on sustainability, in particular with Extinction Rebellion. In April 2019, Stott was arrested during London’s climate change protests, along with over one thousand others. He said he “does not regret” his arrest at the climate change protests in London as the world “needs to turn this catastrophe around”.

Etienne first tried canoeing with the St. Andrews Scouts in Bedford around 10 years old. Over the next few years he became more enthusiastic until he joined his local canoe club, Viking Kayak Club, and started racing in 1992. He started training seriously around 14, making the GB Junior team in 1995.

Etienne teamed up with Tim Baillie and switched to Canoe Double in 2004, after struggling with injuries. They narrowly missed Beijing in 2008, a devastating blow, but decided to continue towards London 2012 after some tough thinking. London 2012 was their first Olympics. Winning gold was both historic (the first in canoe slalom) and dramatic. They narrowly beat their British rivals into the Silver medal position, helping TeamGB climb to an incredible 3rd in medals during arguably Britain’s best ever summer of sport.
