Eye opening experience
This challenge was a little too difficult for me, and I wasn't able to go one month without completely avoiding packaged foods. But I did OK, I reduced the amount of packaging I used a lot. All my vegetables I was able to get without plastic and I found out about this store where you could get beans, lentils and other dry goods in reusable paper bags. The meat however came packaged. I was able to find one place that I could get it in my own containers but it was much to expensive for me.
The whole thing did make it much more inconvenient for me and some vegetables I wasn't able to get a hold of anymore, making it less nutritious. But maybe if I had more time I would have been able to figure it all out.
It made me understand why not everyone recycles, or just does what's convenient and comfortable instead of what's good for the environment. It is hard and it takes time to come up with new ways of doing things, which often takes a lot longer to do. And if you don't have a lot of time, it can become a low priority.
One interesting thing that happened is that plastic that I already had became much more valuable to me. Since I couldn't get any new I started to use whatever I could find to store things in.
But I'm really glad I did it. I learned a lot, discovered new stores and vegetables that I hadn't tried before. Found out that people was interested in what I was doing and that they were supportive. Probably more than anything doing these things for the environment gives me a feeling of integrity.
I will keep trying to find ways of getting food without packaging.
