My Meaningful Connection exercise is one of my most popular and effective (they’re all effective) from corporate speaking, one-to-one coaching, teaching, my personal practice, and my book.

Leadership Step by Step, the book by Joshua Spodek

Since I have non-native English speakers in nearly every audience, I’ve decided to ask some to translate the script into various languages. My leadership class this summer afforded my first two translations. If you can help with others, please let me know. I’d love to feature your work.

German

  1. Frage was sie neben Beruf und Familie gerne machen. Ich empfehle, “Was ist Deine/Ihre Leidenschaft?” oder “Was sind Deine/Ihre Interessen?”

Japanese

1. Ask what they like to do, besides work and family. I recommend, “What’s your passion?”

仕事と家族以外に、大事にしていることは何ですかと尋ねる。おすすめの質問は、“あなたのパッション(楽しみ)は何ですか?“

2.They will reply with something still fairly usual: travel, books, food, etc.

皆さん大抵同じように答えるでしょう。例えば、旅行、読書、フードなど。

3.Say “Cool… you know, I know someone you know who does X for their reason and I know someone else who does X for their reason. Why do you do X?”

下記のように返答する。“いいですね。そういえば私は一人Xをやる人を知っています。その人は~だからXをすると言っていました。さらにもう一人Xをする人を知っていて、その人は~だからと言っていました。あなたはどうしてXをするのですか?”

4.Their response will include two or three words that are unusual or stressed, which carry meaning

彼らは2つか3つの普通とは異なる強調された言葉と一緒に返答するでしょう。

5.Respond to clarify what they said using meaning-carrying words

2つか3つの強調された言葉はミーニングキャリーイングワードで、その言葉の意味を確認・明らかにしましょう。
