My neighbors leave their windows wide open in temperatures below freezing, presumably blasting their heaters

Coming home this evening, I noticed a window of the apartment a few floors directly below mine was open, I estimated by 8 to 10 inches. The light was on and someone was home. The temperature outdoors was about 30 F (-1 C).

I presume the person wasn’t freezing, which meant they probably blasted the heat.

Tomorrow, when it’s brighter, I’ll take and post pictures of how I tape my windows. All the windows in the building are double pane, but they’re old and many have lost the seal around the groove where they slide, so air leaks through. Since I don’t use the heat, I am sensitive to that draft so tape it as best I can.

Since the building has central air and heating, I’m ending up saving more costs for them than they are.

I almost can’t believe someone would do it. It’s sickening enough that stores leave their doors wide open on the hottest and coldest days of the year. They’re at least trying to draw in customers. My neighbor downstairs is just blowing it.

Here’s the tape on my window. You might wonder: why bother when someone else just opens their window half a foot? Why not just turn my power back on, turn on the heat, and not worry about tiny little drafts like that? After all, I lived that way half a century until that point. Why try?

Indeed. Why bother? For those who have to ask or can’t find the answer, I feel sad for them and their emptiness in their hearts and soul where love could be.
