164: Anna Tunnicliffe Tobias, part 1: Olympic gold and Crossfit Fittest on Earth (transcript)

on April 8, 2019 in Podcast

Anna is down to earth for anyone, let alone a gold medalist and CrossFit champion. Watch her videos to see the contrast between what she does her abilities and how she doesn’t have to be humble. We start talking burpees early which for anyone who knows me knows why I would love. She talks about the value of coaching, the intimacy and vulnerability in it. I hear that she wants[…] Keep reading →

133: At Least Try (transcript)

on February 11, 2019 in Podcast

I want to tell two stories that helped guide my environmental behavior, rather one story, a personal one, and one illustration. The first story is back when I played Ultimate Frisbee in college. A guy threw me a pass and it was out of my reach. So I watched the disco by because I couldn’t make a play for it, I couldn’t catch it. At the end of the point[…] Keep reading →

My first rowing half-marathon

on February 5, 2019 in Blog

I recently interviewed Olympic gold medalist and Crossfit Games champion Anna Tunnicliffe Tobias, whom I met through America’s Cup winner and podcast guest Dawn Riley. Given Anna’s achievements, she’s remarkably down to Earth (as is Dawn). In researching her, I found that last year’s Crossfit Games included a rowing marathon—that is, rowing 42,195 meters. The athletes learn what events they’ll do only hours before competing, so they just had to[…] Keep reading →

Year 9, day 1 of daily posts

on January 29, 2019 in Blog

I began posting daily to this blog on January 29, 2011, so today marks day 1 of year 9. That’s 3,328 posts over 2,922 days (I double posted on many days, plus transcripts for the podcast get their own posts). Daily posting led to the development of the sidcha concept, which I consider (possibly) my greatest discovery so far, as well as my burpee, cold shower, picking up trash, and[…] Keep reading →

105: Evelina Utterdahl, part 2: A Month With No Plastic! (transcript)

on November 29, 2018 in Podcast

Welcome to my second conversation with Evelina. I’ve spoken to a lot of people who’ve started from doing less and took on smaller projects so it would seem a lot easier for them. A lot of people talk about change. Evelina did and she did a lot and she enjoyed it more. Recall, she’s a travel writer who chose not to fly and now she’s taking time without using plastic.[…] Keep reading →

104: Jared Angaza, part 2: Motherhood and Apple Pie (transcript)

on November 29, 2018 in Podcast

My second conversation with Jared Angaza was recorded almost a year ago, just after launching the podcast. It’s more conversational, less directed than I’ve done more recently. I think I’ve come a long way on focusing more but I’d love to hear listeners’  ÑŽreactions. It’s also my old microphone. So the quality isn’t quite as good. Jared has acted a lot more than most to live by his environmental values.[…] Keep reading →
