You’ve heard me on the America Out Loud network’s podcast After Dark with Rob and Andrew before. They hosted me again (just Rob these times) to ask about my becoming an auxiliary police officer.

Here’s the first of two episodes, “How sustainability led to protecting and serving the community”:

Rob was very interested in my motivations and my concerns: why didn’t I tell people about it until I finished? What response did I expect or fear? I had asked these questions but not really answered them. You’ll hear I’m still figuring out the answers, but Rob’s questions help me pursue.

Here’s the second episode, “From sustainability to law enforcement”:

Here are the show notes for the first episode:

Author and speaker Josh Spodek recently returned to After Dark to discuss his latest sustainable venture with the host. Spodek, the author of Initiative and Leadership Step by Step, shared with the host that his sustainable lifestyle of living by his values has led him to become a New York City Auxiliary police officer. While his lifestyle change might have some who follow the author on social media scratching their heads, he sees it as a progression of the person he is becoming.

While he talks about what led him to become an Auxiliary Officer on After Dark, he goes into further detail about this change on his podcast “This Sustainable Life” in episode 781: My New Major Life Volunteering Community Project, four years in the making.

Having appeared on “After Dark” seven times to discuss his many ventures, even the host was taken aback by Spodek’s latest venture. This next step in his life is, without a doubt, one for the record, for the author never saw this in his cards, having come from an academic background.

Moreover, this discussion with After Dark and his podcast are both one to listen to.

Joshua Spodek, Ph.D. MBA is a three-time TEDx speaker, #1 bestselling author of Initiative and Leadership Step by Step, host of the award-winning This Sustainable Life podcast, and professor at NYU. He is one of the founders of an invention that showed animated images to subway riders between stations. He has taught and coached leadership and entrepreneurship at NYU and Columbia Business School. He has spoken at Harvard, Princeton, West Point, Google, IBM, The New York Academy of Science, and the Children’s Aid Society. He has appeared on TV and in the NY Times and Wall Street Journal to discuss Sustainable Life and leadership. He was called the “best and brightest” in Esquire’s Genius issue, “astrophysicist turned new media whiz” by NBC, and “rocket scientist” by Forbes.

Here are the show notes for the second episode:

Having appeared on “After Dark” a total of seven times to discuss how we can all be better stewards of the environment, Josh Spodek returns to continue the discussion. This time, however, he talks about his decision to become a New York City Auxiliary Police officer.

Spodek, who has authored books on leadership, said he decided to become an officer to understand the police (law enforcement) culture. Lately, police officers have gotten a bad rap for doing their jobs, which is to protect and serve. While there have been a few bad apples in the bunch, not all are bad.

In the short amount of time he has been an Auxiliary police officer, Spoke said he senses a brotherhood of sorts with the men and women in uniform. He views himself becoming an officer as an extension of his values and living a sustainable lifestyle.

The two-time Tedx speaker will share his story during a workshop he is conducting over the next few Sundays. Can Leading Sustainability be fun and inspiring? YES! . . . and effective too.

He said he is excited to share his experience with others and hopes it will inspire them to do something that aligns with their values.
