I haven’t posted about finding syringes and people shooting up in a while. Last fall or winter the city decided to increase the police coverage of Washington Square Park and the neighborhood. Nobody thinks it decreases the use of fentanyl and other drugs of despair, but they moved it away from this particular park.
Yesterday afternoon, while picking up litter in the park, I saw a couple syringes, the first I saw in that park in several months. This tree happens to be close to the temporary police office, sort of a mobile home parked by the northwest corner of the park.
The park is like my neighborhood’s back yard. Who wants discarded used syringes in their back yard?

Yesterday morning started with other addiction, this time in the form of doof delivered to my neighbor.
I took this picture about 10:30am on a Sunday. On how many levels does it suggest problems?
- Food delivered at all would seem self-indulgent, but Taco Bell is designed not for nutrition or culinary expression but to keep you coming back ordering more through salt, sugar, and fat. It seems closer to depravity than self-indulgence.
- It looks like there’s more toxic waste than doof. Even if it were food, there would be more toxic waste than food.
- Delivered on Sunday morning?
- I’ve never seen delivery to this particular neighbor and I suspect it was delivered to the wrong address, which happens sometimes. It was there when I got home in the afternoon. Being delivered to the wrong address would change the above, but would indicate that the people providing the doof don’t care that much either. It’s just people doing jobs. Food can mean more than just sustenance and a way to pay the bills. Liberals and progressives lecture about poor people not having a choice, missing that this system makes them poor.
- Doof addiction may not look as far gone as addiction to illegal drugs, but it hurts more people overall, partly those addicted, partly the pollution affecting all of us, partly the dehumanization in cruelty to humans in factory farming, partly in the cruelty to animals, etc
