on August 22, 2016 in Education, Entrepreneurship

Ever wonder how much you can get from a course in entrepreneurial thinking and behavior? When it’s not “just” entrepreneurship you learn a lot more, like how to take initiative and responsibility for your life and career. Here’s a student from the class I taught last semester: For written testimonials, click here: “This is one of the greatest classes I have ever taken. Want to connect with people that matter? Take Michael Roderick’s “The Connector’s Path”

on August 18, 2016 in Education, Events, Relationships

Michael Roderick is a superconnector—the type of person that gets written up and interviewed for his passion for connecting people and helping people make things happen. I owe several extremely productive relationships to him as well as close friendships. I’ve learned that when he suggests a connection, it’s worth making. If I share with him what I’m looking for in life, a few days later I get an email from[…] Keep reading →

If you care about education, watch Whitney Tilson’s free movie

on August 17, 2016 in Education

I first met Whitney Tilson probably ten years ago. He was creating a slide show on education reform like Al Gore’s that became An Inconvenient Truth. I’ve subscribed to his mailing list since and emailed with him periodically. I finally watched the movie he made on his slide show, A Right Denied. He made it in 2010, so we’re late. If you care about education, especially K-12 education in the[…] Keep reading →

Why “Entrepreneurial Problem Solving” instead of “Entrepreneurship”

on August 11, 2016 in Education, Entrepreneurship

Why do I call my class “Entrepreneurial Problem Solving” or sometimes “Entrepreneurial Thinking and Behavior” instead of “Entrepreneurship”? Entrepreneurship means starting a company. It’s a subset of things you can do entrepreneurially. Solving a problem entrepreneurially means solving it without the resources at hand you need to finish it. Solving a problem non-entrepreneurially means you have the resources at hand to solve it. If Johnson & Johnson wants to introduce[…] Keep reading →

More problems with business plan competitions

on August 9, 2016 in Education, Entrepreneurship

Whoever created the first business plan competition was on to something. I applaud their idea and implementing it. That time passed. We know more effective ways to motivate learning entrepreneurship. Those competitions aren’t helping. They distract students from starting businesses with one-time awards too often created in the interests of venture capitalists, not aspiring entrepreneurs. To illustrate, consider the question: Which would you prefer: to win a business plan competition,[…] Keep reading →

Why leadership, sales, influence, and motivation is about them, not you

on August 5, 2016 in Education, Entrepreneurship, Leadership

People didn’t follow Martin Luther King because he wanted equality and freedom. They followed him because they wanted equality and freedom. Elon Musk isn’t so popular because he loves electric cars. He’s popular because we love electric cars, and their benefit relative to gas-powered cars. Dwight Eisenhower didn’t enjoy leading the D-Day invasion. The allies, soldiers, and their families feared Hitler and wanted to protect themselves. Eisenhower’s description of leadership[…] Keep reading →
