My annual bike ride upstate and lunch at the farm providing my CSA, then riding back by the Little Red Lighthouse under the George Washington Bridge

I’ve written about Where to buy the best food around New York City and praised the system of CSAs and the incredible flavor, value, and convenience of the one I participate in from Stoneledge Farm. Every year they host a lunch and invite all subscribers. I think I’ve gone every year since I started, though they may have skipped a couple years during the pandemic. I forget.

I don’t take many pictures since I don’t post to Instagram or social media. Here are a couple pictures from the farm:

I have to post a picture of their cherry tomatoes:

You can’t tell from the picture, but their cherry tomatoes are the best I’ve tasted. They picked most of them to deliver in past weeks and months, so the ones on the vine today weren’t going to be distributed, meaning we could eat as many as we wanted. I did. I ate tons them.

I can’t believe people eat candy when fruits and vegetables exist. I wish I could tell you how delicious these cherry tomatoes are. Pure sunshine.

More pictures of the farm: Here’s an old post with more pictures of the farm that look nearly how it looked today: Food comes from dirt, not plastic bags, boxes, and bottles.

I took my bike on the train most of the way, then rode the last 90 minutes or so, though I ate breakfast during the ride. I found a few people there who had driven up from the city or nearby and hitched a ride back with one couple. We put my bike in the back and made the ride social. They had planned to go to a flea market in Woodstock, NY, which we passed on the way back.

They dropped me off on the New Jersey side of the George Washington Bridge, so they didn’t have to deal with city traffic and tolls. I rode across the bridge, enjoying beautiful views, though I’ll never forget the clearness of the air when I crossed it during the pandemic, when fewer people were driving.

Some of you may know about the Little Red Lighthouse under the George Washington Bridge. I think someone published a children’s book about it but I haven’t read it yet. I learned about it in college, when the ultimate Frisbee team I was on at Columbia drove past it on the West Side Highway. We could see it, but I never ventured to see it up close.

I happened to today and took a couple pictures. I guess the farm pictures were more timeless, but seeing the Little Red Lighthouse up close was my first in almost 40 years.

All told, I rode about 40 miles. Not a huge amount, but more than enough to remind me that as I grow older, my legs have less force and my body stores overall less energy. I’m beat, though still in great spirits after eating that many cherry tomatoes.
