649: Listener Questions 04: What Started Me Acting Sustainably, Kids, and What to Do If You Don’t Have Time

on December 11, 2022 in Podcast

In this episode, I answer a question a listener emailed: Can you share more details on what exactly prompted you to make the switch to acting more sustainably and if it was abrupt or gradual. And perhaps more practical ideas on what to do if you have kids, especially picky eaters, or if your schedule is just too busy to prepare meals 100% of the time. If you have questions[…] Keep reading →

Under one dollar: My record low monthly electrical use: 10 kWh ($0.96 + fixed costs)

on April 9, 2022 in Addiction, Freedom, Nature

This month set a record low electrical use at only 10 kWh, or less than one dollar on supply charges. I don’t remember what I did this month to keep it so low, or rather what I didn’t do. Note I still use hot water for my showers, which my building heats with natural gas, though my showers are only a couple minutes. The two reasons I’m sharing I’m sharing[…] Keep reading →

552: Hilary Link, part 2: colleges and universities talk sustainability but rarely act. This college president does.

on January 18, 2022 in Podcast

Hilary describes her commitments as achieving some success and some failure, but learned from both. We start with her personal experiences and memories of ice skating and cross country skiing as a child leading to her sometimes painful lessons today. More than just ice skating again, she took lessons with her child. Listen to her for the lesson and why it was painful, but I’ll share that she learned to[…] Keep reading →

419: Balint Horvath, part 4: Fatherhood and sustainability

on December 7, 2020 in Podcast

Since they say other things I’ve done is impossible before learning I’ve done them, I expect they’re making excuses and that I could solve parenthood problems too. Without kids I haven’t solved their problems (though guest Bea Johnson has in her family of four that produces less[…] Keep reading →

What “recyclable,” “recycled,” and “compostable” mean

on July 11, 2020 in Nature

Most of the pollution in a product happens upstream of what you buy or use. Anything single-use wastes resources before you handle it. Recycling barely reduces a thing’s waste relative to not using it. Likewise, once something is made, especially plastic, it will exist for a long time. Future generations will have to deal with it. The more you reduce, the more you realize you don’t need things. Why do[…] Keep reading →

358: Bald versus plastic

on July 9, 2020 in Choosing/Decision-Making, Podcast

Here are the notes I read this episode from: People keep acting like I’m different, that they have to balance things that I don’t when acting on the environment. So I’ll share a recent decision I made. People I tell have sounded intrigued and delighted to hear it so I’ll share with you. First sensed hairline retreating at 19. Not much for maybe a decade following, I don’t remember. Maybe[…] Keep reading →
