But Aren’t We Solving Things? How can efficiency increase pollution?

I write about how unsustainability led to imperialism, which led to colonialism and slavery. But wait. Why bring up all this awful history? Haven’t we learned from it? Have we learned from history? Aren’t we moving on from it? Look at all the things that can solve our environmental problems: carbon taxes, electric vehicles, carbon offsets, more efficient batteries, and so on. Can’t we solve each problem one at a time as it arises? Aren’t you letting the perfect be the enemy of the good? There’s a difference between intent and effect. Where Artificial Intelligence will go and why (it’s not where everyone is saying)

ChatGPT is surprising everyone with what it can do, how far beyond expectations, and in so many areas. Where will artificial intelligence go next? What will it do? Whom will it affect and how? It's hard for people who didn't live when people viewed beating a human at chess as absolutely impossible for computers, let alone playing a decent game. Today we can only conceive of chess as something computers can do, no problem. Each stage of chess going from being impossible for computers to play, then possible, then better than any human surprised nearly everyone. Artificial Intelligence, us, and becoming superfluous

Going off my usual topics, but when I see people talking about computers reaching and surpassing our intelligence, I only see them talk about it from our perspective. What will the machines or robots do with us? It hit me that if they out-think and out-perform us, first of all, the day they equal us, I expect the next day they'll out-perform us. Then the following day, or soon after, they'll surpass us by so much we won't know what's happening. Maybe "day" should be "month" or "year," but the point remains. If it takes intelligence to create intelligence, once they have more, they'll evolve faster and fast. Second of all, wouldn't they become the important character then?
