Working on Purpose radio with Dr. Alise Cortez hosted me

Dr. Alise Cortez hosted me for a wonderful conversation on leadership, education, sustainability, career, and more. It's radio, but we recorded video. https://youtu.be/j77zcwgqN3A?t=40 Episode notes Where have all the entrepreneurs gone? We seem to be producing less and less each year. Josh Spodek says this is due in part our educational system that teaches compliance at the expense of pursuing interests and passions in learning. He’s out to teach people to take initiative and pursue their passions all over their lives – and that entrepreneurship is available to virtually everyone. Speak Like a Leader podcast features me today

When TEDxNYU invited me to give a TEDx talk with less than two weeks to prepare, I knew a coach would help. I researched and hired John Bates. The result? Three TEDx talks and counting, plus one invited me back to lead a work group for TED Countdown. Plus I count him as a friend. John hosts the Speak Like a Leader podcast. I'm his guest today. We talk about leadership today, what happened to civic duty, how do we restore it, how to we handle lockdown, and more. Looking to improve your or your company's public speaking? I recommend John without hesitation for one-on-one coaching. I've also attended his corporate training at a major firm you've heard of. He captivated and activated them. To…

Hear me on No Backing Down

You may have noticed I've hosted a few NFL players on my podcast, including Superbowl competitor New England Patriot Marquis Flowers and Superbowl winner Philadelphia Eagle Bryan Braman. I met them through the guy whose podcast I just appeared on, Sean Stellato. He's an NFL agent who also runs a sports representation and marketing agency, runs skills camps, training and conditioning coaching, and player events and promos. His podcast is called No Backing Down, also the name of his book. Our conversation covers sports, jumping or rather being pushed out of airplanes, growing up in dangerous neighborhoods, and a lot of personal things. Listen to the episode. We've become friends through sports and leadership. At his draft party outside Boston a couple years ago I…

The 21st Century: dozens of ways to communicate . . . and all of them break.

I've lost track of how many times I've had to say it, but some weeks close to daily: The twenty-first century means there are dozens of ways to communicate with someone . . . and all of them break. I hope you've experienced more success, but I've faced connections dropping, sound not working, people unable to connect, . . . do I have to list every failing? Have you experienced it too?

Any Given Runway features me (who avoids runways)

Randell Carlton Green, author of Smart & Solo: The blueprint for efficient and enjoyable solo travel, hosted me on his podcast, Any Given Runway. Given what looks like a focus on flying, I appreciate his open-mindedness in inviting me. As it happens, the podcast's focus evolved from travel to great people---athletes, authors, adventurers, artists, and more. We spoke on habits, sustainability, personal challenges, and what makes great people great. Listen to the episode. The episode notes: 106. Today’s guest is the incredible and dynamic Joshua Spodek. He is a 3X TedX speaker and bestselling author, and holds a Phd in astrophysics and an MBA from Columbia. Joshua has a unique philosophy on life, and has created many simple rules to enable himself to have an…

The Heroes of New York podcast host Anu Senan posted our second conversation. The show features people who show exemplary behavior in the epicenter of the epicenter. Listen to the episode. She liked the episode enough to invited me for a second episode. Here are the show notes: In this episode, Josh and I talk about change. There is only one way to fight climate change, pandemics and systemic racism. Through change. But to change anything, we need to first change ourselves. Changing our behaviors is how we can influence change in our society. But how hard is it? Habits create a lifestyle: Hear me on the Style Your Life podcast

Erin and Michelle host the Style Your Life podcast. They wanted to learn and share with their audience about habits, which are the foundation of a lifestyle. They can be if you choose. They led a conversation around habits and how to keep from quitting them. I talk and write a lot about habits and sidchas here. This conversation is a friendly, non-intense entry point. Few things improve a life more than starting and keeping effective habits and sidchas based on your values. Listen to the conversation. EDIT: Erin and Michelle posted the video recording: https://youtu.be/AFGWPHwT9Zs Listen to the conversation.

The Market and the Good podcast hosts me for two episodes

Chris Gassman of The Market and the Good podcast posted two episodes with me. The first covered my work in under 10 minutes. Since I described my podcast 4-step process, he chose to try it out, which we did for the second episode, as a deep dive. Most podcast hosts shy away from being guests on their shows. They tend to feel vulnerable at answering questions, especially about stewardship. Chris went the other way, embracing vulnerability and responsibility, as leaders do. Check out the episodes:

Three Latest Videos on New York City’s lockdown with Me and Magamedia.org’s Rob Harper

I can't describe the unexpected fun and growth coming from my conversations with Rob. When I learned of Ruth Bader Ginsburg's friendship with Antonin Scalia, I couldn't get it. How could one tolerate someone who worked to make the world the opposite of what they wanted, especially with the stakes so high? Reading John Stuart Mill's On Liberty, I intellectually understood his point that you have to share your ideas to have them challenged or you don't know what you're talking about. I didn't internalize it. Living with two people---my mom and stepfather---who look on Trump with disdain, I think all three of us are surprised at the friendship and conversations Rob and I are creating. I think my surprise is pleasant. Theirs is more…

“The Value and Joy of Individual Action”: Hear me on the Growthbusters podcast

One of the few podcasts I listen to every episodes of is Growthbusters. Hosts Dave and Erika invited me for a second appearance, which went live today, The Value and Joy of Individual Action. I list Dave as one of my environmental role models. My first Growthbusters appearance Here is my first appearance on Growthbusters: Changing the World Starts at Home. The Growthbusters movie I recently posted about the Growthbusters movie, having rewatched it and found it more informative and prescient than I remember: Our greatest taboo is the greatest issue of our time. The show notes: Is there any use in choosing to live more sustainably if you’re surrounded by an unsustainable system? There are those who argue there is little value in making…

Science discovering “tastes good” versus “wanting more”

Have you noticed the difference between something tasting good---that you like the sensation---versus wanting more---that it motivates you to eat more, though doesn't always taste good? If the nuance sounds foreign, I've written on it several times. I use it to illustrate the difference between craving and emotional reward. In my experience, the difference seems subtle until you get it. Then it's huge. Emotional reward improves life, craving enables others to control you, among other differences. Here are some of my posts on it: Tastes Good versus Want More, explored in depth "Want to eat more" and "tastes good" aren't the same feeling Examples of "tastes good" versus "want more" Avoid that addictive tug People study this difference. They usually use scientific terms, which I…

The Great Isolation Part 3

Rob and my conversations are becoming more interesting all the time. This week goes in two new, exciting directions. First, Rob shares his writing experience---what I've come to learn happens a lot, but first heard from him, that his characters speak to him. I since came across a study that a Majority of authors 'hear' their characters speak, finds study. We end the conversation with on-the-fly starting to schedule a town hall for me to address his conservative audience about the environment. I don't see it as any more a political issue than traffic laws. I expect speaking to this audience about the environment will lead some to attack, as Rob points out, suggesting I talk to liberals who themselves aren't doing what they tell…

Lockdown reflections, locked down with family for the first time since the 70s (with Robjh from Magamedia)

Rob and I have created a series of one-on-one reflections on inside views on the lockdown. In my case, I haven't lived this closely with my mom since before school---not college, not high school, but school, meaning kindergarten. Among other things, I share on a flare-up between my step-father and me and how I plan to resolve it. Also my comparisons between generational differences today and in All in the Family, the TV show about Archie Bunker. Rob is living with two young children. He's reflecting more on how relationships and identity change in general. Not the conversations you'd expect from a Trump supporter talking with the host of the Leadership and the Environment podcast. Enjoy hearing a 48-year-old leadership expert sharing his frictions with…

Video on New York City’s lockdown with Magamedia.org’s Rob Harper

I appeared on Magamedia.org a second time, which I'll post about tomorrow (here's my post on my first appearance, explaining why I'm appearing on a site supporting someone acting contrary to many of my values). [EDIT: I posted it the next day: See my second appearance on Magamedia.org. My podcast episode with my mom preempted it.] In preparing for the appearance, Rob and I got to talking about New York's lockdown and how the region is handling it. We didn't talk politics---just about experiences, observations, and predictions. I considered a fair amount of it insightful. (Here's Rob's appearance on my podcast). We talked about handling SolitudeConfinementNot being able to get away from partnersLosing incomeOpportunityReflectionFamilyMuch more https://youtu.be/zy-7w2WLoqI If you don't talk with people with diverse viewpoints,…

Psychology Today: White Men and Preconceived Notions

Psychology Today's Editor at Large, Hara Estroff Marano, and I continue our conversations on challenging topics. Today we continue with white men and preconceived notions of us. We were talking about topics before hitting record, I started to describe the pattern that comes up a few minutes into this recording, she lit up in the way someone who has thought about something and has something to say about it does, so we picked stereotypes of white men. Here's the article. Here's the recording: https://youtu.be/HKjrnnOd-jc I think we both thought, "I hope we don't get fired," but also felt, "how can we learn if we don't speak?", so we bit the bullet and recorded. I haven't heard a conversation like it before. The number of threads…

Would you expect me on a podcast called Ask Women Podcast: What Women Want? With an episode title "How To Be A Leader With Women | The BJ Technique"? Yes, 'BJ' meaning what you think. Here are the notes about the hosts, Marni Kinrys and Kristen Carney: What do a female comic and a professional wing girl have in common? The realistically raw and hilarious perspectives on what women ACTUALLY want in a man. Prepare to be offended and awed as Marni Kinrys & Kristen Carney take you through the uncensored and often ridiculous mind of a woman to help you better understand, appreciate, and avoid getting punched by the next girl you come across. See me on Magamedia.org for one of my favorite interviews, “A Different Look at Climate Change”

Yes, that's Maga as in Donald Trump's slogan "Make America Great Again," and yes, I consider it one of my favorite interviews. To clarify, we spoke about the environment more generally than just climate. Watch and listen to our conversation Magamedia.org's other articles on climate criticize Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Al Gore, Greta Thunberg, the Green New Deal, and others. One article calls climate change: a hoax, folks. It is a get rich scam for politicians that liberals have fallen for. Of course scientists say it is a problem. Trillions of dollars moving to their industry is at stake. Of course they want to push this narrative in public. I disagree with this view. I disagree with many of the site's articles. So why did I speak…

Here Comes The Sun 2019 brings tears to my eyes

Abbey Road was the first album I listened to until the little orange plastic record player I played it on either destroyed the grooves or the record destroyed the needle. It was the 70s. I didn't know music. My taste has since matured, but I never stopped loving the Beatles. The 2019 remix of Here Comes The Sun differs only slightly from the original but it brought tears to my eyes. https://youtu.be/KQetemT1sWc 1969 was a difficult time, before I was born. I understand John, Paul, George, and Ringo were arguing and breaking up, but I love what they recorded. Hearing it now hit me on two levels. First, 2019 are difficult times too. This new release reminded me of how serious and how wrapped up…
