An exercise in doing what you have to even when you don’t want to

on February 18, 2013 in Blog, Exercises, Leadership, Tips

Everybody faces tasks they don’t want to start, know they have to do, but also know won’t take that long — things you might characterize like pulling teeth, holding your nose and taking your medicine, or grinning and bearing it. We all want to learn to motivate ourselves better. Examples include talking to your boss about a raise, talking to a significant other about a problem that’s been bothering you[…] Keep reading →

Monkey Mind

on January 25, 2013 in Awareness, Blog, Freedom, Tips

Illustrative labels can help, as opposed to evaluative, judgmental ones like yesterday’s post. I love the term “Monkey Mind.” I heard it from a friend who teaches yoga. Without hearing any explanation I immediately understood its meaning and saw how the term helped understand a concept. When you increase your self-awareness you start to notice how your mind works. My teacher was great, if anyone wants a recommendation for someone in New York City. I learned three things I didn’t expect that I found valuable. I haven’t seen them written up elsewhere, not that I read much on yoga since I find[…] Keep reading →

On the values of travel

on May 27, 2012 in Blog

Last month I wrote how I don’t like to travel, just as I embarked on a trip to North Korea and China that ended up including Vietnam too. Then I had another trip of a lifetime! The amount I learn and grow when I travel — nearly every time — forces me to rethink that statement. People who’ve known me for years know I haven’t liked to travel for a[…] Keep reading →

Physical and emotional tension are similar and you can use either to help the other

on April 3, 2012 in Awareness, Blog, Fitness

We use the same word to describe emotional and physical tension for a reason. They go together. I tend to think of them almost as the same thing. I haven’t done any scientific studies, but I’ve found any time someone has emotional tension, it will manifest itself physically. Any time you have physical tension, it will constrain you physically. When I see someone who walks and moves stiffly, I find[…] Keep reading →
