If you can’t improve it, spending time on it wastes your time

on June 22, 2015 in Choosing/Decision-Making, Leadership, Tips

There are a lot of things worth paying attention to and spending time on trying to affect. If you can’t or won’t do anything about something you don’t like, it doesn’t improve your life to worry about it or to take time away from something you like or can do something about. You can call it “choosing your battles” or “discretion is the better part of valor.” If you’re taking[…] Keep reading →

How to get a mentor in two easy steps that work

on May 27, 2015 in Education, Leadership, Relationships, Tips

I trust you know the value of a mentor. I’ll take for granted you also know how to create a connection with someone. If not, read my Meaningful Connection exercise and my social skills exercise series. So I’ll start at a point where you have at least a rudimentary dialog with someone whose mentorship will help you. Step 1: Ask them for advice Ask them for advice on something that[…] Keep reading →

Advice to a young person considering their eating habits

on May 22, 2015 in Habits, Nonjudgment, Tips

I wrote the following to someone who was looking for arguments on eating habits, wanting arguments not to eat meat but liking the taste and convenience. On one side you’re looking for logical arguments but on the other side you have taste, pleasure, and convenience. No logical argument can counter your feelings of pleasure or convenience. Your issue is your own internal conflict: you have a gut feeling you’re doing[…] Keep reading →

Questions to raise your self-awareness

on May 20, 2015 in Awareness, Models, Tips

Every system of leadership, professional development, and personal development I’ve heard of has some concept of raising your self-awareness. “Know thyself.” “The unexamined life is not worth living.” Acting on the advice isn’t easy for many. on May 12, 2015 in Fitness, Nature, Tips

I’ve been avoiding buying food with any packaging. I started April 20. I updated my progress with pictures in “Buying no food with packaging, eighteen days and counting“. Saturday evening I bought some onions in one of those net bags. Onions make you cry. Today I’m scheduled to get a shipment of vegetables from my farm share and that comes in a box so the experiment would have ended today[…] Keep reading →

on May 5, 2015 in Education, Exercises, Fitness, Habits, Tips

Following up yesterday’s post, “The basics: more simple and valuable than you think” about how the masters tend to focus on basics, I found a series of videos made by a great basketball player, Michael Jordan. He’s made few instructional videos. He could do things no one else could and made them look easy. He can teach anything he wants. So what does he teach? Simple basics. Know your geese!

on March 27, 2015 in Entrepreneurship, Leadership, Tips

A friend and colleague visited a couple weeks ago. He invited me to breakfast with another friend of his who happened to be an incredibly successful founder and CEO of a business related to a project of mine. You don’t expect to make such valuable connections. We made a great connection and may find ways to collaborate. I met the visiting friend in the first place through another guy I[…] Keep reading →
