Nobody says “You care too much what other people think” when you care what *they* think

on February 11, 2015 in Awareness, Nonjudgment

Has anyone said “You’re thinking too much about it,” “You care too much what other people think,” or the like? I was talking to someone about something in my life. She said one of those phrases to me. So I talked about the same thing in her life. Suddenly she became very interested in the conversation. My conclusion: Nobody says “You care too much what other people think” when you[…] Keep reading →

Why do readers like the posts I write the fastest so much?

on February 10, 2015 in Creativity, Habits, SIDCHAs

Whenever I’m short for time and have to write a post fast to make sure I post that day, I always get emails commenting that they liked the post. Posting here is a SIDCHA of mine, after all, so I don’t miss posting. Sometimes that means posting fast. I haven’t been keep track scientifically, but I have casually, and I don’t remember a counterexample. I occasionally get emails saying they[…] Keep reading →

Fundamentals and technique: what you do when you don’t know what to do

on February 9, 2015 in Art, Exercises, Leadership

A professor / actor I’m working with described a harrowing experience that illustrates the value of fundamentals and technique. He told me he forgot his line on a Broadway stage in front of around 500 to 1,000 people. Some paid hundreds of dollars for their seats and want a professional performance. What do you do if you forget your lines on stage? There’s a fundamental technique a lot of actors[…] Keep reading →

Non-judgmental Ethics Sunday: The Hazards of Other Planets

on February 8, 2015 in Choosing/Decision-Making, Ethicist, Nonjudgment

Continuing my series of alternative responses to the New York Times column, The Ethicist, looking at the consequences of one’s actions instead of imposing values on others, here is a take on today’s post, “The Hazards of Other Planets.” The company Mars One is trying to establish colonies on Mars by offering one-way trips there within the next 10 years. I’ve gotten into heated debates about the ethical implications of[…] Keep reading →

See me at Stand Up For Passion, March 3 in New York!

on February 7, 2015 in Choosing/Decision-Making, Creativity, Events

The event Stand Up For Passion is a tremendously personal and inspiring event that is growing and growing. Created by entrepreneur/artist/director/comedian/performer Arnaud Collery, each event features seven speakers speaking for seven minutes each on a passionate story or experience in their life. The effect is to create community of people who get close to each other—performers and attendees. I am honored that he invited me to speak at the next[…] Keep reading →

Passions, you create

on February 6, 2015 in Habits, Models, Tips

I wrote the following to someone and couldn’t help sharing it here. There’s a common belief that passions are something you find. Like if you just turn over enough rocks you’ll find yours. It’s a nice fantasy and excuse for people who haven’t achieved much to explain why they haven’t and others have: “Well, I could do as much as so-and-so if I had found my passion. When I do[…] Keep reading →

To start a habit, focus on emotions

on February 5, 2015 in Awareness, Exercises, Fitness, Habits, Leadership, Tips

Different people suggest starting habits different ways. Some say to start with behavior, like setting a New Year’s resolution or doing it every day for a month. Others suggest starting by changing your environment, like by putting a note on your computer monitor or daily schedule, wearing a device that measures your exercise, or joining a web page that tracks and reminds you. That’s all low-level tactics. Tactics, no matter[…] Keep reading →

Why I live where I do

on February 4, 2015 in Habits

I took a year off from college and with all the money I had—$1,000—bought a one-way ticket to Paris. My only goal was not to return before June. My challenge was that if my savings dropped to the cost of a return flight I’d have to choose between the ticket home and risking getting stuck there. I had the safety net of my parents bailing me out, but at the[…] Keep reading →

This pattern improves your life

on February 3, 2015 in Art, Awareness, Entrepreneurship, Exercises, Fitness, Habits, Tips

Notice this pattern and you’ll know how to improve it. It applies to an activity. I’m thinking of exercise when I write it, but many activities fit it. The pattern When you’re not about to do it, you think of it as something you generally want to do. When you’re about to do it, you feel anxious, maybe to the point of fear. You have to overcome that anxiety and[…] Keep reading →
