I’ve posted how unhealthy fruit juice is, how beverage corporations (Coke and Pepsi, mainly) turn even so-called “100% juice” orange juice into chemical concoctions (which led to a beverage industry PR person contacting me to try to change my story), and how healthy orange peels are. They’re full of fiber, vitamin C, and flavor and texture that contrast and complement the juice inside. Since most people think of citrus fruit[…] Keep reading →
I posted this elsewhere and couldn’t help reposting here, risking repeating from earlier posts: Bought an electric pressure cooker a few months ago (Cuisinart CPC-600, $50 pre-owned but unused from Craig’s List). One of the best purchases of my life, especially combined with my farm share, which brings me fresh seasonal vegetables. Also avoiding food packaging, which nearly eliminated food from boxes, bags, or other packages. I tell myself I’ll[…] Keep reading →
[This post is part of a series on Cold Showers. If you don’t see a Table of Contents to the left, click here to view that series, where you’ll get more value than reading just this post.] I haven’t written about cold showers lately, probably because the water hasn’t gotten below fifty degrees since last winter, but this morning it did, so I am. The thermometer said the water was[…] Keep reading →
I can’t tell you how exhausted I was when I got home yesterday. Traveling meant about five hours of sleep in the forty-eight leading to last evening’s sleep. Telling a client about burpees and Sidchas recently, when I mentioned doing them when tired, drunk, or otherwise discouraged, he asked, “wait, you do them then too?”, implying that for a long-term activity, you don’t have to be a stickler for rules[…] Keep reading →
Remember when no one heard of Sriracha hot sauce? It felt cool to know about it first, at least for me. And it was a hot sauce that tasted better than just hot. Did you ever wonder why it tasted so good? Here’s the answer: It’s twenty percent sugar! Out of 100 grams, 20 grams are sugar. Sure, you only have a few grams at a time, so a serving[…] Keep reading →
Do you hate doing things that take effort and get you no results? You’re probably doing it a lot without realizing it, especially if you don’t understand this simple concept I’ll illustrate below. If you’d like to stop wasting your time, energy, and other resources on things that don’t help your life, read on. Some things work like this: If the temperature goes up in Fahrenheit, it also goes up[…] Keep reading →
Damn, it feels good to lift. Since starting this blog, I’ve run a marathon, done over sixty-thousand burpees, developed well-defined abs, won summer league finals playing Ultimate Frisbee, rowed on the stationary rower the equivalent of the distance to Pittsburgh from New York, and a few other active things. But I haven’t lifted weights in that time. Except I have a few times lately, and, man, does it feel good.[…] Keep reading →
Yesterday began my fifth year of daily burpees, never missing one! I love the fitness they create. More importantly, the practice of integrity they create leads to me not skimping in other areas. My routine has expanded from ten burpees total to include stretching, back exercises, and ab exercises—one set in the morning, another set in the evening. I’ve also started other SIDCHAs. I’ve written before about their benefits, which[…] Keep reading →
