My Mission

My mission is to help change American (and global) culture on sustainability and stewardship from expecting deprivation, sacrifice, burden, and chore to expecting rewarding emotions and lifestyles, as I see happen with everyone I lead to act for their intrinsic motivations.

In my case the emotions have been joy, fun, freedom, connection, meaning, and purpose.

Systemic change begins with personal change.

266: Thoughts on my MAGA interview

on December 24, 2019 in Podcast

My notes I read from for this post: Yesterday I posted my interview on a site that strongly supports Donald Trump. I do not. Yet I described it as one of my favorite interviews. What gives? The conversation prompted thoughts on environment and politics. Read my post on the conversation and listen to the conversation for context. For more context, the guy who hosted, Rob, his profile says “Vote Red[…] Keep reading →

See me on Magamedia.org for one of my favorite interviews, “A Different Look at Climate Change”

on December 23, 2019 in Audio, Leadership, Nature

Yes, that’s Maga as in Donald Trump’s slogan “Make America Great Again,” and yes, I consider it one of my favorite interviews. To clarify, we spoke about the environment more generally than just climate. Watch and listen to our conversation Magamedia.org’s other articles on climate criticize Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Al Gore, Greta Thunberg, the Green New Deal, and others. One article calls climate change: a hoax, folks. It is a get[…] Keep reading →

Year 9, day 1. Nearly 150,000.

on December 22, 2019 in Fitness, Habits, SIDCHAs

On December 22, 2011, a friend and I challenged ourselves to do ten burpees a day for thirty days. As I had aged out of playing ultimate at the level I wanted to, squeezed enough sense of accomplishment from running marathons that I wanted, and didn’t want to pay to use the gym down the block, which I might not go to in the rain and required changing, reshowering, and[…] Keep reading →

265: I was wrong

on December 21, 2019 in Podcast

Here are the notes I read from for this episode: Ways I was wrong I usually start my story about acting more sustainably with my personal challenge to buy no packaged food for a week. In my second TEDx talk I describe how that challenge emerged from stopping eating meat, then hydrogenated oil, corn syrup, and foods where fiber had been removed, which was my proxy for overly processed food.[…] Keep reading →

I rowed 100k (60 miles) in 22 days. Memento Mori.

on December 20, 2019 in Fitness, Habits, Stories

The manufacturer of my rowing machine, Concept2, created its annual holiday challenge. In honor of anyone rowing at least 100,000 meters between Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve, they would donate to a climate charity of your choice. Something got into me to do it. 26 days meant five of my workout cycles (day 1: lifting, day 2: Turkish Get Up (TGU), day 3: rest, day 4: cardio, day 5: rest). I[…] Keep reading →

Cold weather when I was young

on December 19, 2019 in Fitness, Stories

Running errands today in 16 degree weather (-9C) reminded me of a time playing Ultimate in college. I think it was the year we were in the finals of most regional tournaments against Wesleyan and expected to make nationals, though I don’t remember exactly since what do I remember exactly from around 1990? In any case, the only times we could all meet was super-early, maybe 6am. This was during[…] Keep reading →

Stumbling to leadership

on December 18, 2019 in Leadership

Returning from speaking on environmental leadership where, while some pushed back and expressed skepticism, the organizers invited me back to speak again and most who approached me after said they found it inspirational, thought-provoking, and the like, I’m reminded of my first talks on leadership. About six months before launching the podcast, I gave a series of talks at NYU. Several told me they didn’t like my message, they tuned[…] Keep reading →

My China Africa story of common ancestors

on December 17, 2019 in Stories

Years ago I lived in Shanghai for eight months, helping develop the next generation of my first company, Submedia’s, technology with our sub-licensee. I knew the technology best, having invented it and with my physics background. They knew manufacturing. No one knew how to make cylindrical lenses to the tolerances we needed and an affordable price. So I worked in their factories with their engineers. We often met after work[…] Keep reading →

264: Larry Yatch, part 2: Navy SEAL precision

on December 16, 2019 in Podcast

This episode brings you a trainer who has reached top levels of leadership and teaching leadership break down how to learn. How to learn to learn. Let that sink in. To me this episode felt like a master class by a practitioner and educator. Note his precision in language. At first I found it pedantic, but then realized it’s not annoying, it’s liberating. When you speak English, you don’t sometimes[…] Keep reading →
