$10 of vegetables

People keep asking if eating vegetables is expensive. They rarely believe the opposite, which I find. Farmers markets rock When I only knew how to shop in supermarkets, I didn't know how affordable and accessible fresh fruits and vegetables were, even if you live in a food desert. Some people will never get past their blinders to keep acting as if they know better, as if it's only possible for people with privilege. Of course we want to improve access. Buying local produce and sharing how to do it is how to help farmers markets spread and people buying cheap, healthy, and delicious. Yesterday's haul Here's yesterday's haul from one stand. Even I was surprised. Even in mid-December in New York, I bought plenty of…

Adding less salt, sugar, and fat makes you taste more of each

Salt I wrote about my salt experiment of going a month adding no salt to any food. As I expected, though was still surprised at the result, when I added salt after that month, my normal amount tasted horribly over-salted. Adding maybe twenty percent made things taste as salty as before. Besides reducing my salt without using as much, I also became more sensitive to all the other flavors of my food. Since I cook with fresh, delicious vegetables, adding less salt led to more salt flavors and every other flavor too. Since I invite people over for famous no-packaging vegetable stew so much, I see some guests add as much salt as I used to. Sometimes I taste it and can't believe how salty…

Everyone would love this nonprofit idea that would help clean the world

The Problem: restaurants, stores, and hotels give away a lot disposable stuff that ends up in landfills---napkins, plastic cutlery, shampoo, ketchup packets, plastic bags etc. They feel they can't stop giving these things away out of fear they'll look cheap. The Solution: an independent nonprofit led by people who don't support those industries that creates signs to put in each place suggesting customers use no more than they need. The nonprofit being independent and staffed with people who don't support the companies protect against them looking cheap. That is, if a bunch of fast food restaurants formed a coalition, you couldn't distinguish them acting to protect the environment from acting in their self-interest. Their history of putting profit before health, workers rights, worker safety, the…

Oprah, how obesity spreads, and the environment

How obesity spreads You probably heard about a 2007 New England Journal of Medicine study, The Spread of Obesity in a Large Social Network Over 32 Years, implying that Obesity can spread from person to person, much like a virus, according to researchers. When one person gains weight, close friends tend to gain weight too as the New York Times stated in, Obesity spreads to friends, study concludes. It continued: people were most likely to become obese when a friend became obese. That increased one's chances of becoming obese by 57 percent. There was no effect when a neighbor gained or lost weight, however, and family members had less of an influence than friends. It did not even matter if the friend was hundreds of miles…

If we don’t lower our birth rate nature will raise our death rate.

As this phrase---if we don't lower our birth rate nature will raise our death rate---came out of my mouth in conversation yesterday, I could tell it captured a lot in a few words. I expect I'll start saying it more and promoting it. It gets to the heart of what we need to do. All research I know of says that we are over the planet's carrying capacity, which means if we don't lower our population, it will crash, as does every population that overshoots what their population can support. People can't get past thinking that the growth rate is decreasing, but the growth rate isn't even the population going down. It's just rising more slowly. Pick any environmental issue. Its causes lead to overpopulation.…

My second TEDx talk, “What everyone gets wrong about the environment” and how to get it right

I am deeply grateful to the TEDxWaltham team for inviting me and hosting the event, October 5, 2019. https://youtu.be/sTYiHr1lu10 Here's the blurb: Josh shares his remarkable, radical, personal journey to more sustainable living -- away from a standard American diet (and life) to his vegan, nearly package-free diet and away from a jet-setting lifestyle to not flying for 4.5 years and counting -- and his profound discovery of a common misconception about acting on environmental values that can help each help each of us live more sustainably and enjoy it.Joshua Spodek PhD MBA is the bestselling author of Leadership Step by Step and Initiative, host of the award-winning Leadership and the Environment podcast, and a professor at NYU. 4 Delicious Benefits of Acting on the Environment

I wrote a piece in Thrive Global, 4 Delicious Benefits of Acting on the Environment, on my process of polluting less and the joys I've received from it. It begins: I last emptied my household garbage in September 2018. The time before that, June 2017. Yes, I took 16 months to fill one load of garbage, and a small load — one canvas tote bag full. I don't need to use plastic bags because everything wet or that rots I compost. When I said those dates in my last TEDx talk, the crowd woke up. I could hear people saying, "What?", "Really?", "How is that possible?" Afterward, people asked how I did it. Specific details for eliminating the biggest sources of garbage — food packaging…

More disgust at day 2 of a food sustainability event
Piles and piles of packaged food

More disgust at day 2 of a food sustainability event

The second day of the event I wrote about yesterday brought more disgust -- this time at lunch. The provided lunch. Nearly everything was packaged. I saw no one suggesting any problem with all the packaging. They also provided unpackaged vegetables and dip, so they could bring unpackaged food. Still, everyone I saw get vegetables and dip put them on single-use disposable plates claimed compostable, but 1) creating them produced most of the waste, 2) they won't likely be composted, and 3) they probably aren't compostable: speakers at the event talked about poisons in many so-called compostable things contain PFASs. The amount of waste is a minor issue. I see leadership as the major issue. People aren't doing what they say needs to be done.…

Disgust at a food sustainability event

I attended day one of a food sustainability event today. It was not only about sustainability, but most speakers talked about it. The name of the event isn't important since nearly every other event does the same. Nearly everyone working on sustainability fell into the pattern I call chasing efficiency through recycling, ignoring reducing total waste. They miss the difference between increasing efficiency and decreasing total waste. Companies love this tactic because it sells more of their products while distracting from the waste. A quick glance at the plastic on nearly any beach will tell you the amount of total waste is what's important today. We're more efficient than ever and producing more waste than ever. They mistakenly act and think like people haven't been…

Imagine well-known people responding how we do to the environment

Heroes and role models Acting on one's environmental values is a leadership issue we are shirking. However challenging, stewardship, responsibility, and action improve our lives, families, and communities. We are missing out on richer, more fulfilling lives. Want evidence? I made images of heroes and role models of mine responding as most people today do to acting on their environmental values. Not heroes I also made images of people who chose to do what hurt others.

Update on my vegetable overload

I invited readers to come over for some of my famous no-packaging vegetable stew the other day since I was overloaded with vegetables from my CSAs. The invitation worked. Two weeks ago, I hosted people for six meals. This week so far I've hosted five with two more before the week ends when I pick up my next CSA vegetables Tuesday evening. That will make 13 meals for others in two weeks. All have described the food as delicious. It was all vegetables from nearby farms or bulk bins from a nearby coop. I don't think any landfill trash came from it. Hosting is a blast. I get to catch up with old friends and make new ones. There's nothing special about me here. Over…

Near Manhattan? Come try my stew this week.

My CSAs are overloading me with abundant, delicious vegetables and fruit. I can't eat them all and I've invited all the friends I can. You've read or heard about my famous no-packaging vegetable stews. If you're near New York, invite yourself over and try some. I'm serious. If you read my blog regularly, email me and schedule coming over. Here are pictures of a fraction of it. Victory from the jaws of defeat: I froze two-thirds through my TEDx talk

Today I gave my talk at TEDxWaltham, "What Everyone Gets Wrong About The Environment." Before I got home, an attendee emailed one of the most encouraging and heartwarming reviews I've received: "I just wanted to tell you, I was extremely inspired by you and your talk today. I can't remember a time when I was more impressed by someone's philosophy and dedication to action. I hope we can chat soon by phone or video. I'd love to learn more about what your doing and how I can make positive changes in my life. I am available at your convenience if you can chat for a few when you can. Thanks for sharing your message - it was really a gift." It didn't go as planned,…

How to plant a tree in New York City?

I realized I've never planted a tree. With around 8 million people, I'd at first think New York had too many people for everyone to plant a tree, but maybe not. Have you planted a tree? Can you help me do it, maybe pointing me in a direction to do it? Can I just bury an acorn in a park or is there more to it? I found these pages Milliontreesnyc.orgStreet Tree Planting And some more. I thought I'd post here for two goals: I figure I'd learn more from a person who's done itTo make myself publicly accountable, so later people can point out that I committed in some way The idea got into my head in conversation with a friend working on the…

I plogged on TV with the Doctor and the Diva

"The plogging community is waiting for you to come aboard!" I said it to Doctor Steve and I'm saying it to you. "When you jog, plog." The producers from daytime TV show The Doctor and the Diva contacted me. They were doing a segment on plogging. They seemed genuinely interested in the activity and bringing it to their audience. Is picking up garbage off the street on TV what I got my Ivy League degrees for? When I live in a world with this garbage, hell yeah! Logistics took forever. I saw the work to create a show with several segments per show. Eventually schedules worked, I went to their studios, we recorded me and Doctor Steve, plogging, and here is the segment: https://youtu.be/9RWOV0jwWVY Though…

My third Hidden Why, with Leigh Martinuzzi

The best conversations and podcast episodes come from friends and experienced conversationalists. Leigh and I have recorded enough together to become friends, though he's in Australia. Today he released our third conversation on his podcast, the Hidden Why (our past episodes). We covered environmental leadership and initiative. I recommend listening. Leigh is an expert, experienced interviewer. He plogs too. His show notes: Welcome back, Josh. This is my third time having Josh on the podcast. I find him absolutely fascinating and inspired by how well he aligns his life with his values. In this interview, I speak with Josh again about the environment and how he is doing his part to lead change in this domain. Behaviours before belief. We talk about how he has…

Your Daily Environment 012: Naomi Klein, Exxon, and us

After the other day's fireside chat between Greta Thunberg and Naomi Klein, Naomi read a statement from UK student activists. They took Exxon and its peers to task for knowing about environmental problems they were causing but doing nothing. A lot of what she said they did, we do ourselves! The overwhelming majority of people I see obfuscate information to keep doing what they're doing, knowing it hurts others. They distract and so on. My point is not to imply Exxon is innocent nor to imply anyone should feel guilty. My point is that if you think Exxon should change and you're acting similarly, can you use that judgment to take responsibility to motivate yourself? https://youtu.be/ATuWtcLODLs

Why Greta Thunberg is the Leader of the Future

Read my post in Thrive Global following my speaking to her briefly when her boat docked a week and a half ago, then seeing her speak with Naomi Klein last night at an event hosted by The Intercept. Here she is at the event: Yes, my camera phone is the world's crappiest. EDIT: Here's the event. Naomi Klein begins introducing her at 36:38 and Greta begins speaking at 42:45. https://youtu.be/Vw58ckJdDmI?t=2197

My electrical bill

I think I'm doing a good job of bringing my electrical use down. Each year it's lower most months than the year before, though it will be tough to beat last December, when I was out of town and unplugged my fridge. I'm annoyed that for $5.64 worth of power, I have to pay $23. The fixed basic cost is almost three times my actual use. I think my fridge uses the most, probably followed by the pressure cooker. I wonder if my window is big enough for a solar panel that would let me go off the grid. It must be pretty close. If anyone has experience, please let me know.

Your Daily Environment 011, We don’t cause climate change?!?

My comments on Barbados's Prime Minister disavowing responsibility for climate change despite the nation causing and promoting well above the world average in greenhouse gas emissions: "We are on the front line of the consequences of climate change but we don't cause it." You may say I'm untimely, given the devastation they face, but I didn't choose her words and I find her words irresponsible. https://youtu.be/9x1GbgkoPHo Shirking responsibility disempowers us when we need to act. She could have said, "we're feeling the consequences and we contribute more than most. Seeing the consequences of our behavior, we will change. You will face these consequences soon too. We recommend you follow us." She didn't. I believe responsibility and stewardship improves our lives. What improves your life more…

My trash from redoing the floor

Without a set way to account for my garbage, I've been counting since September 2018 as the last time I emptied my household trash. I also had my floor redone, which produced a bunch of trash and recycling, which I count as nearly trash. Most of the old flooring was still usable. I posted it free on Craig's List. After two guys with vans canceled on their appointments to pick up the flooring, a woman with a bicycle and trailer made her appointment. I was happy that she got it and not surprised that the one who chose her own power over fossil fuel showed up. I helped her carry the stuff downstairs and load the bike, which took a few trips. Anyway, yesterday my…
