Nature

When you hear “Green Growth,” “Closed-loop Economy,” or “Net zero”, watch your wallet.

People love someone justifying doing what they know hurts others but they just want to anyway. They'd believe jet planes emit rainbows and unicorns if they wanted to see the Eiffel Tower enough. Hell, they basically do believe their flights don't pollute and that drilling and refining the oil fueling them didn't destroy people's homes, air, land, and water when they spend a few dollars on "carbon offsets." People love feeling absolved of responsibility for actions that make them feel guilty. They usually respond to their conscience feeling free by polluting more. Every time I've heard the terms "green growth," "closed loop," and "net zero," the context has been applying "creative" accounting---that is, deception---to something revoltingly unsustainable, leading to people feeling absolved of responsibility. Our greatest taboo is the greatest issue of our time: Watch Growthbusters free (for limited time)

What almost no one talks about but that everyone can do something about, the greatest taboo of our time, yet the greatest issue behind covid-19, behind all pandemics, behind global warming, behind plastics, mercury, dioxin, and all other pollutants, behind the 2008 recession, behind the coming recession (or depression), behind more plastic in the ocean than fish, behind there being no place to vacation not overrun with people, behind people (maybe you) giving up on the environment, behind the threat of nuclear weapons, behind most wars, . . . you get the idea . . . motivating all these problems: exponential growth in a finite system. Dave Gardner took on growth, running for office in Colorado, and created a documentary, Growthbusters. For a short time…

How much is COVID-19 affecting the environment?

Podcast guest and bestselling author Nir Eyal, whose pre-lockdown challenge included avoiding flying, emailed the following question: Hi Joshua - I had a question you may be able to answer. Have you considered the potential positive impact on the environment due to reduced emissions as a result of the COVID crisis? I wonder what reduction in use of fossil fuels would be required to prevent climate change and if we're anywhere close to those numbers now that economic activity has been so heavily impacted.Any ideas?--- Nir Eyal Most of us have seen pictures of New Delhi skies and Venice canals so know that globally we're polluting less, however externally motivated. I decided to look up if people had researched. I thought you might value my…

The most valuable no-nonsense covid-19 information I’ve seen (from Nutritionfacts.org’s Dr. Michael Greger)

I posted a podcast episode on Dr. Michael Greger's video on pandemics, episode 318: Why pandemics will keep increasing and how we can reverse the trend. He was also a guest on the podcast. Today he posted the most valuable, comprehensive information on covid-19 I've seen, all referring to original research from medical and science literature. I rarely post other people's material, but I found it worth copying. I'm contacting him for his approval. I'm not trying to plagiarize but to help him save lives and reduce pain. EDIT: I recommend everyone watch these videos on preventing pandemics including COVID-19, considering how much our behavior is causing them. Both feature Dr. Greger. Pandemics: History & Prevention Can we stop a future pandemic? Dr. Michael Greger…

This bookmark illustrates what’s wrong with our world

I found this bookmark at my mom's house. She and my stepfather don't remember buying it so my mom figures someone gave it to them. Here's the front. Don't the flowers look pretty? When I was a kid we'd sometimes pick flowers or leaves and press them between pages of books, so making a bookmark of them makes sense. They aren't flowers, though. They're pictures of flowers, printed onto paper, laminated. Here's the back: Whoever printed this bookmark didn't have to print "50% recycled / 20% post consumer paper." I imagine they anticipated doing so would help sell bookmarks. They created something to look like nature that anyone could make themselves, promoting apparent non-waste, covered in plastic. It's total waste. Anyone could use a scrap…

Do you research how much water certain produce requires to grow?

Someone asked on a message board, "Do you research how much water certain produce requires to grow?" I responded: Yes. At the beginning, when I felt obligated to act and it felt a burden, I avoided learning new things, feeling if I kept learning, there'd be nothing left and I'd feel guilty eating anything. As I practiced more, met the farmers behind my CSAs and farmers markets, and learned how delicious all fruits and vegetables are, I came to act out of love and passion. Like an artist, attention to detail emerged as joyful. Now I love learning more about everything I eat.The result keeps bringing me back to more local foods. Yes, in New York in March that means I've coming off months with few…

Would you take piano lessons from someone who breaks pianos with a sledgehammer but doesn’t play?

Would you take piano lessons from someone who breaks pianos with a sledgehammer but doesn't play? Does it matter how many books on music theory that person read? If they don't play but only break pianos, you probably are going to learn more how to break pianos than to play them. If you learn anything about the piano, it will probably be theory at best. Then don't take advice on the environment from someone who flies around willy-nilly and doesn't live sustainably. More important, I recommend not being someone who sledgehammers pianos, pollutes the environment, or gives advice on it. Most people give themselves advice on how to act environmentally. If you pollute a lot, you'll probably give specious, self-serving, fatuous advice that leads to…

My Bronx cooking demonstration video

Did I mention before the virus that I accepted an invitation to show how I cook my famous no-packaging vegetable stews in the Bronx? Joshua Spodek cooking demonstration in the Bronx I believe cooking this way is simple and accessible to anyone. I brought the ingredients, my pressure cooker, and my knife and chopping board by subway to this community group's potluck dinner. We met in a church, where I showed how I make the stews. I used only ingredients that are cheap and have shelf lives requiring shopping no more than once every two weeks or month. Dried beans last years, squash at least a month, and cabbage at least two weeks. Rhonda, who invited me and whom you'll hear on my podcast soon,…

Covid-19: Addiction to flying and other polluting behavior was a lack of motivation and imagination

In two days I begin my fifth year not flying. I estimate talking to about 1,000 people about not flying and that about 998 of them said that not flying would be impossible for them---not difficult or unwanted but impossible. Suddenly they're able not to fly. Their claims of being unable to avoid flying were never a matter of reality, as they described, but a lack of motivation and imagination. To my ears, they sound like addicts who can see the withdrawal they'd experience trying to kick their habit but not the life improvement beyond. If you tell a heroin addict that they will prefer exercise and working for a living to shooting up, I suspect they won't believe you. They'll probably consider you not…

Covid advice applies to the environment. What we can do here we can do everywhere.

EDIT: I recommend everyone watch these videos on preventing pandemics including COVID-19, considering how much our behavior is causing them: Pandemics: History & PreventionCan we stop a future pandemic? Dr. Michael Greger M.D explains what's next. My mom suggested a post from a woman, Jodi Ettenberg, who posts as Legalnomad, I'M IN THE VULNERABLE CLASS FOR COVID-19. A PLEA TO TAKE THIS VIRUS SERIOUSLY. First, if it doesn't go without saying, I recommend you follow the guidelines of the most knowledgeable people and organizations on the virus. I am not one of them so seek them out. I'm sure you already know that advice, but making sure anyway. I'm commenting on what I see could help humanity beyond this situation. I'll copy here advice from…

The fashion world is noticing buying less

Women's Wear Daily quoted me today in Kaley Roshitsh's article, Not Buying It: Is the issue overconsumption? Some consumers and industry experts are simply not buying it. "No-buy" stints and zero-waste draw interest. The article begins Not Shopping Period: "No-buy" stints and zero-waste draw consumer interest. There is the growing consumer trend toward "buying less, but buying quality." There is the increase in renting and resale. And then there is the ultimate in sustainability: not buying anything at all. I spoke about motivations to avoid buying clothes, in part driven by Lorna Davis's experience on my podcast foregoing buying clothes for a year and loving the experience. Moreover, she inspired many of her peers---high-powered executives---to follow suit. Here's a pdf version. If you're not an industry…

Would you take a free course in sustainability leadership?

Would you like to act more on the environment? Would you like to act sustainably with confidence? Would you like to boost your career? Would you like to enjoy your results so much you want to share them with others? People have suggested I create a course in how to act sustainably since my approach is so much different than most mainstream advice, like "here's one little thing you can do for the environment" or "Panic! The world is going to end!" I'm thinking of piloting a short online experiential course on environmental action and leadership---likely 5 or 6 sessions using the pedagogy that led to course reviews like: "This is one of the greatest classes I have ever taken. It was engaging, thought provoking,…

My electric bill after a month with the fridge off

A little over a month ago, I wrote in How long can I keep my fridge unplugged? how learning about fermentation and uses of electric power led me to see how long I could last in the winter with my refrigerator unplugged. Deciding to start First, I want to reiterate my process to decide to start the challenge. First the idea to try it came. Then I wondered if it was possible. Then I realized, of course living with the fridge off is possible, the question is how long. Then I wondered what I would do. Here's the key part that I've learned from my challenges and the opposite from what I learned from school: planning and analyzing delay starting and learning. I learned to…

Book launch: The War on the EPA

I wrote a blurb for The War on the EPA (on Amazon), launching next week, February 8. If you're looking to understand and act on the US federal government's inaction, despite its one-time action, I recommend the book. It explains the EPA's history, goals, and people. I've spoken with author Bill Alley. He is deeply committed and cares about the agency's mission, as well as our nation's. Few actions could help this nation and world more in the long run, I suggest, than establishing stewardship and responsibility as primary values and actions. Restoring the EPA can help. You can read my blurb in this image or scroll down. The War on the EPA assembles the government agency's history, the toxic tragedies that prompted its creation,…

Why record temperatures matter

The temperature in New York City hit 65F (18C) earlier this month. This week's forecast predicts highs in the 40s every day but one---higher than the historic average high of 38F. The following conclusion should be obvious, I would think, and lead people to change their behavior big and soon. Somehow people aren't acting, or are acting minimally. So what's the problem? 45F is more comfortable than 38F. When the temperature hits the 60s, people go out and enjoy themselves, as they do in the spring. Everybody likes spring weather. The problem with record-setting high temperatures is that enough of them for years give credence to the climate models that predicted them. The problem with credence in those models is what they predict beyond this…

How Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s look when you avoid packaging

How Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s look when you avoid packaging

When you avoid packaged food long enough, all the garbage and missing flavor becomes the food and doof's main identity. There's more packaging, advertising, and other non-food stuff that will fester in landfills for centuries or at best cost money and resources to decompose. These pictures are what Whole Foods and Trader Joe's look like when you avoid packaged food. In fact, these stores contribute to places like in these pictures. Some of the trash in the pictures may have passed through the stores. If you buy packaged food, you may have contributed a bottle or bag pictured. I point this out not to evoke emotions but to suggest alternatives---for example CSAs and farmers markets, which can save money and time and increase accessibility, especially…

Avoid Eating “Doof”. What’s doof?

EDIT: Here's my TEDx talk on doof: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L4OAaI_uXgY EDIT: I recorded podcast episodes on doof. Here's the first: EDIT: People who are using the word doof: New York City Mayor Eric Adams, bestselling author Dr. Joel Fuhrman, bestselling author Dr. Michael Greger, bestselling author Dr. Michael Turner, addiction specialist and psychology professor Bruce Alexander, and more. Many more I've lost track of, but will try to share as they come. We need a new word to describe a concept missing from English. Books on food try to distinguish between healthy, fulfilling food grown to sustain and industrial products designed for profit, to entertain your mouth, without regard for your health. For example, when Michael Pollan's Food Rules says "Eat food, not too much, mostly plants,"…

How long can I keep my fridge unplugged?

I love the site Low Tech Magazine, which I consider one of the best on the net. Reading its piece Too Much Combustion, Too Little Fire, the section "Energy Use Compared: Ancient vs. Modern Households" made me think of my food power consumption. It was December and I don't heat my apartment so it's cool. Yet my refrigerator was on. As I started to wonder if I could get by without it, at least during the winter. The apartment is cool anyway and my food is less perishable -- more root vegetables, cabbage, etc -- I figured the best way to find out was to try. As I mention in my TEDx talks, the pleasant surprises that avoiding packaged food and flying improved my life…

Emptying my household garbage for the first time in 2019

The last time I emptied a load of household garbage, and therefore started filling this load was September 2018. The time before that was, I think, June 2017. I figure I'll also empty my recycling. I see from when I put my high school love letters in the recycling that I started filling this load in late October, meaning I'm filling my paper recycling faster than I expected. I don't remember when I last emptied my plastic and metal recycling, but I see a beer can in it from the summer and it's not at the bottom, so at least six months. Recycling lowers Earth's ability to sustain life and human society nearly as much as landfill garbage, no matter how much people wish otherwise,…

See me on Magamedia.org for one of my favorite interviews, “A Different Look at Climate Change”

Yes, that's Maga as in Donald Trump's slogan "Make America Great Again," and yes, I consider it one of my favorite interviews. To clarify, we spoke about the environment more generally than just climate. Watch and listen to our conversation Magamedia.org's other articles on climate criticize Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Al Gore, Greta Thunberg, the Green New Deal, and others. One article calls climate change: a hoax, folks. It is a get rich scam for politicians that liberals have fallen for. Of course scientists say it is a problem. Trillions of dollars moving to their industry is at stake. Of course they want to push this narrative in public. I disagree with this view. I disagree with many of the site's articles. So why did I speak…
